What Is a Joik?

Exclusive Workshop with Juhán Niila Stålka

What is a joik? How do you joik? Discover joik, the traditional Sámi form of vocal expression, in an exclusive workshop with Lule Sámi joiker and storyteller Juhán Niila Stålka at Tjállegoahte in Jokkmokk. With limited places, this intimate setting allows time for listening, conversation and exploring joik through your own voice. The workshop is held in English.

Deeply rooted in the Lule Sámi joik tradition, Juhán Niila shares joiks, stories and perspectives on their meaning and significance. Together, we explore how joik connects people, animals and places, its role in the past and today, and how it has changed over time.

Through “Guess the Joik”, we explore joiks of forest animals by listening, guessing and trying them with our own voices. This is how Juhán Niila learnt to joik from his father.

In Juhán Niila’s family, joik is a living cultural heritage passed down through generations. Several joiks in his repertoire have been in the family for at least five generations. During the workshop, you will hear some of these joiks and the stories that give them context.

No previous experience is needed. You are welcome to take part at your own pace, with the emphasis on listening, understanding and exploring. The workshop offers a deeper, more nuanced understanding of joik and an opportunity to try it yourself.
